IndyCar Series Returns to Richmond International Raceway for Ninth Straight Year in 2009
Richmond, VA (July 30, 2008)--Once again, fans at Richmond International Raceway will be treated to a weekend of open-wheel action, featuring speeds of more than 170 mph around the ¾-mile D-shaped oval. The IndyCar Series will return to Richmond International Raceway for the ninth consecutive year on Saturday, June 27, for the SunTrust Indy Challenge--race number eight of the 18-race 2009 schedule.
The SunTrust Indy Challenge will again fall on its traditional date of the last Saturday in June and is expected to feature defending champion Tony Kanaan, Graham Rahal, Marco Andretti, Danica Patrick, Dan Wheldon, Helio Castroneves, Scott Dixon and many other stars of the IndyCar Series "under the lights." Additionally, two USAC Series races are expected to return that same weekend.
"We are excited to host the ninth year of IndyCar Series racing at Richmond International Raceway in 2009," said track president Doug Fritz. "Some of the most talented drivers will battle it out on the shortest track on the circuit. It's amazing to think that they will again turn laps in less than 16 seconds and reach speeds of more than 170 mph on a ¾-mile track. The previous eight races have been well-attended by our great fans and we look forward to having an even bigger and more exciting race next year."
In response to requests from loyal fans, the 2009 SunTrust Indy Challenge will once again have an additional 50 laps, for a total of 300 laps of excitement "under the lights" at Richmond International Raceway.
For the ninth straight year, SunTrust will return as the title sponsor of Saturday night's event. "SunTrust is a great partner at Richmond International Raceway," said Fritz. "We're looking forward to our ninth consecutive season with SunTrust as the title sponsor of an exciting IndyCar Series race."
A record paying crowd was on hand this past June for the eighth annual SunTrust Indy Challenge at Richmond International Raceway. With extreme speeds, plenty of wheel-to-wheel action, and tons of excitement for the whole family, the 2009 event at America's Premier Short Track is expected to bring an even larger crowd and more excitement.
Tickets for the ninth annual SunTrust Indy Challenge will be available for purchase in mid September. Reserved tickets will cost $35 and general admission tickets will cost $30. Kids 12 and under will be admitted for free in the general admission sections with a ticketed adult.
