Newgarden fastest in IndyCar test at Sonoma

Reigning IndyCar champion Josef Newgarden led a Team Penske-Chevrolet 1-2-3 in testing at Sonoma on Monday – although some teams were not gunning for one-lap pace in optimum conditions.

Newgarden, who set his first pole position for Penske in the 2017 season-closer here last September, today clocked a time 2.6sec slower but on primary tires. His 1min18.10sec was enough to put him top by 0.2sec from teammate Will Power.

Simon Pagenaud was a further 0.35sec adrift, approximately one tenth of a second ahead of Sebastien Bourdais, driving the Dale Coyne Racing with Vasser-Sullivan entry.

Two-tenths further back was the second Coyne car being wheeled by Pietro Fittipaldi, who is likely to be confirmed as one of the DCR #19 car’s drivers within the next two days.

Three newcomers to the series – Matheus Leist, Robert Wickens and Jordan King –filled the next three places, each of them setting faster times than their respective teammates in the afternoon session.

King was the busiest driver in the afternoon session, completing 53 laps.
