Firestone Firehawk Race Tires Supplied: 1,120 dry-condition slicks; each car receives eight sets (32 tires) for the two-day weekend. Rookies participating in Thursday's practice will receive two sets each for that session, while drivers who are not classified as rookies but have not previously run at Nashville in testing or a race will be allotted one set for running on Thursday. Tires provided for Thursday's activities must be returned to Firestone Racing prior to Friday's first practice session.
Firestone Racing engineers have chosen a new tire specification for this year's Firestone Indy 200. This spec is comprised of the same left-side tire that was previously used at Iowa this season, and a right-side tire that is the same as the one employed earlier this year at Homestead, Texas and Kansas, but with an increased gauge to stand up to Nashville Superspeedway's abrasive concrete surface.
From Al Speyer, Executive Director, Firestone Racing: "This is a weekend that Firestone Racing anticipates all year long. We love it when the stars and cars of the IndyCar Series and Firestone Indy Lights make their annual stop in our 'hometown' to showcase Firestone Racing's products in front of so many of our teammates in Middle Tennessee. And tying the race into our company-wide United Way campaign, 'Racing to Help,' truly makes it a highlight of the year. As always, Nashville Superspeedway's unique concrete surface will present challenges to the Firestone Firehawks, but our engineers have chosen a spec aimed at meeting those demands. The left-side tire has already proven its merit at Iowa Speedway earlier this year, while additional gauge on our superspeedway tire is expected to withstand the concrete and then some."
Firestone "Tire-ific" Move of the Race: This $10,000 prize is awarded after each IndyCar Series race to the driver who best utilizes his or her Firestone tires to make a bold, dramatic move during the event. It could be relying on the Firehawks' great grip to execute a daring pass, or having the confidence in the tires' durability to run an extra stint on a set to improve position. After each race, Firestone Racing submits the top three "Tire-ific" candidates to www.indycar.com, where fans cast their votes during the ensuing week to determine the winner. The "Tire-ific" recipient from the July 6 race at Watkins Glen (Ryan Hunter-Reay, Darren Manning and Buddy Rice are nominated) will be named in pre-race ceremonies Saturday evening.
