Conquest Racing has strong showing at Mid-Ohio
Lexington, OH (August 8, 2010) - Conquest Racing's Bertrand Baguette continued his progression in the IZOD IndyCar Series today with an 11th place finish in the Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio presented by Westfield Insurance, while his teammate Francesco Dracone was making his series debut.
Starting from the 15th position, rookie Baguette put in another strong performance aboard his Conquest Racing Dallara.
Using his first stint to save fuel, the opted strategy didn't pan out as planned when a caution period packed the field together on lap 24, just before his pit stop.
However, finding himself in 13th place following his stop for fuel and a set of Red Firestone tires, he used every following restart - three within 10 laps - to gain positions.
By the lap 38 restart, he had made his way to 10th, and went on to run as high as sixth before having to make his final stop on lap 58.
Once everyone's pit stops had cycled through, Baguette was running ninth and things were looking good for the rookie as he was aiming for a top-10 finish.
However, while he was trying to get by the eighth place car of Marco Andretti, he went a little wide and due to the pick up of marbles on his tires lost some grip, which allowed Raphael Matos to get by him.
Baguette then ended up in 11th when the quicker car of Ryan Hunter-Reay overtook him with less than 10 laps to go. The performance was an encouraging one for the rookie, as it was his best this season.
Teammate Francesco Dracone, who was getting his first taste of an IZOD IndyCar Series race, had a good learning experience in his Conquest Racing Dallara.
Starting from the 23rd spot, the former Italian Formula 3 driver went on to place 22nd, despite making a couple of small mistakes, spinning the car in turn nine on lap 63 and then again on the front straight during a lap 68 restart.
While the 26-year-old from Turin, Italy didn't damage anything on the car on his initial spin, he did have to make an extra trip down pit lane for a new front wing following his second one.
Overall, the Lapasta.biz and Halkin Jet sponsored driver put in a good showing taking into account the steep learning curve that he is facing.
Conquest Racing with drivers Baguette and Dracone will next be on track in two weeks time when the IZOD IndyCar Series visits Infineon Raceway for the Indy Grand Prix of Sonoma, which takes place on August 22.
11th - Bertrand Baguette, #36 Ice-Watch Dallara/Honda/Firestone "I think it was a good race for us. We had a good first stint where we were saving fuel. Unfortunately, just before the first pit stop we had a yellow flag so that didn't help with our strategy. We then put on the Alternate Firestone tires for our second stint and that was a really good choice. With all the cautions during my second stint, I was able to overtake on every restart. The car was very good in that stint. "I made a little mistake close to the end that probably cost us a top 10. I was trying to get by Andretti when I went a little wide into the marbles and I lost some of the grip and that's when Matos got by me. "Overall, I'm happy with my race, and my weekend, we could have been better in qualifying but in general it was another encouraging weekend."
22nd - Francesco Dracone, #34 Conquest Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone "For my first IZOD IndyCar Series race, it was a positive experience because I was able to keep a good pace. The first stint was a little more difficult but then with the Alternate Firestone tires it was going really well. Unfortunately I made two mistakes, one in which I ended up damaging the front wing, which was disappointing. But overall, we finished the race and I was able to gain more experience. So I think I can be satisfied with this first weekend in the series."
