DE SILVESTRO CONTINUES HER FAST PACED EDUCATION AT LONG BEACH
IPhoto Credit: Team Stargate Worlds/HVM Racing n addition to being a challenging track to compete in, the Toyota Grand Prix at Long Beach is known for its ability to teach young racers important lessons in racing, and that is exactly what Team Stargate Worlds/HVM Racing driver Simona De Silvestro received at the famed temporary street course.
After qualifying in the 13th position yesterday, Simona would end up completing Sunday's 85 lap race without the finishing position she would have liked, but she earned valuable experience and lessons that will continue to develop the young rookie as she progresses through this season.
After spending much of the morning doing press events and spending time with her family and friends, who traveled from Switzerland to show their support, Simona climbed into her No. 78 Stargate Resistance entry and took the green flag start. In the opening laps, she went down a couple of positions, but was never deterred and was able to pit on lap # 23 and on lap # 53 for fresh tires and fuel.
The fast pace race only had 5 caution laps so the blistering pace of the race kept young Simona busy. With the race coming to a close and now not having optimal balance on the car, Simona was able to preserve a 17th place finish.
Simona De Silvestro, Driver No. 78 - "It was a tough race. It didn't really go our way today with the strategy and I struggled a bit coming off the hairpin turn today but, once again, I am constantly learning and will use that knowledge as I compete in many other races. I know the importance of a good qualifying session and how it plays into this race and so many other things. Now, I've completed my first Long Beach Grand Prix in the IZOD Indy Car series and I hope to be better as a result of the experience and use that in the future."
Keith Wiggins, HVM Racing Team Principal - "An uneventful race for us. No real opportunities and we spent the race in traffic. On the other hand, it was a long run and so more valuable experience for Simona. So we move to the next one."
Imran Safiulla, Team Stargate Worlds Principal -"This was a tough weekend, yet again. Simona continues to learn and develop as a driver and this race has certainly given her some valuable experience. We weren't best during the race and got stuck behind a slower car for many laps, which resulted in a less than desired finish. We will get better."
