Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing to confirm Spencer Pigot for at least three races as his Mazda Road To Indy prize for winning IndyCar's feeder formula.
Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing will today hold a teleconference confirming Spencer Pigot as a part-time teammate to Graham Rahal in the 2016 Verizon IndyCar Series.
Pigot, who scored six wins on his way to the Indy Lights presented by Cooper Tires crown, had five teams bidding for his services, and Dan Andersen, who owns and promotes the Mazda Road To Indy, spent the last month sifting through the proposals. RLLR got the vote after a banner year in which Graham Rahal scored two wins and finished fourth in the championship.
The three-race entry prize for winning Indy Lights, which guarantees Pigot an entry in the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500, has also resulted in Rahal and Pigot selecting the 2016 season opener at St. Petersburg and the Grand Prix of Indianapolis in addition to the 500.
"I’m very excited and honored to be starting my career in the Verizon IndyCar Series with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing,” said Pigot.
“It’s always been my goal to be an IndyCar driver and be in the Indianapolis 500. I can’t thank everyone at RLL and [Mazda Road to Indy promoters] Andersen Promotions enough for this opportunity.
"The team is coming off a great 2015 season and hopefully we can build on that success.
"The 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 is going to be a very special moment for me and the highlight of my career so far. It’s what I’ve been working towards ever since I started racing. It’s the biggest race in the world and I can’t wait to be a part of it."
