Firestone Tire Performance Recap: Firestone brought the same tire specification to Kentucky Speedway that was used last weekend in Chicagoland. The Firehawks once again gave the drivers the confidence needed to race side-by-side at more than 200 mph. They were designed based on testing conducted at Chicagoland Speedway in June and will be employed again at the season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
From race winner Helio Castroneves, #3 Team Penske Dallara/Honda/ Firestone: "The Firestone tires were fantastic! The beginning part of the race was slippery, but the tires just kept getting better and better through the night. I felt like we could even leave the tires on and not change them, because the car was really, really good on the tires. So, Firestone tires - good job!"
From Joe Barbieri, Manager, Firestone Racing: "Congratulations to Helio and Team Penske for their off-sequence gamble that paid big dividends. Tonight's race marked the IZOD IndyCar Series' 200th event, and Firestone Racing is proud to have been there for each and every one of those 200 races. It's amazing to watch these drivers go wheel-to-wheel for 200 laps, and it's gratifying to know that they have the confidence in their tires to allow them to make moves all over the race track. We saw a few great "saves" out there tonight as well. The drivers have that confidence in their tires because we have been around since the very beginning, and they've witnessed our passion and dedication to the sport over the years."
Firestone "Tire-ific" Move of the Race: This $10,000 prize is awarded after each IndyCar Series race to the driver best utilizing his or her Firestone tires to make a bold, dramatic move during the event. Nominees from tonight's race are: Helio Castroneves, for gambling on an off-sequence pit stop strategy that paid off big; Ed Carpenter, for a hard-fought second-place finish that was a splash of fuel away from his first victory; and Tony Kanaan, for fighting from his 26th place starting position to finish fourth. Fans can vote this week at www.indycar.com to determine the winner.
