Justin surprised by lack of Kansas qualifying pace

30-April-2010 - Justin and the Dreyer & Reinbold Racing team were scratching their heads after a disappointing qualifying run left them P20 on the grid for Saturday's Road Runner Turbo Indy 300 at Kansas Speedway. Ryan Briscoe took pole position for Team Penske (212.145 mph) with Chip Ganassi Racing's Scott Dixon beside him on the front row. Mike Conway, Justin's DRR team-mate, will start from 10th in the No. 24 Dad's Root Beer car.

Morning thunderstorms meant that practice was limited to just one session on Friday afternoon and qualifying started later than scheduled at 5.15pm. Justin's No. 22 Charter/Z-Line Designs car set a four lap average qualifying speed of 209.168 mph around the 1.5 mile oval.

During the earlier practice session Justin and his engineers chipped away at an understeer problem and by the end had found a reasonable balance on the No. 22 car, lapping at 210 mph, a mile an hour quicker than his subsequent qualifying run. The drop-off in qualifying pace came as a surprise, but Justin is confident of moving forward in the race once the problem is pinned down.

"I can't believe we were not quicker," said Justin. "My Charter/Z-Line Designs qualifying car was really good and I could drive down deep, right on the white line, with minimal steering input. I'm going over the data with my engineers right now to see if there is any drag on the car and fix that. I'm looking forward to the race tomorrow and we'll see if we can pick up positions."
