FIRESTONE FIREHAWK FAST FACTS
IndyCar Series -- Road Runner Turbo Indy 300
Kansas Speedway -- Kansas City, Kansas
April 26-27, 2008 -- Round 4
Firestone Firehawk Race Tires Supplied:
* 976 dry-condition slicks; each car receives eight sets (32 tires) for the race weekend.
* Tire stagger for this weekend is set at approximately 0.46 of an inch. Stagger, which helps Indy cars turn more smoothly on oval tracks, is created by producing the right-rear tire with a slightly larger diameter than the left rear.
The left-side compound is a new compound for 2008 superspeedways designed to have slightly more grip. The right-side compound is unchanged from 2007. The construction of all four tires has been slightly modified from 2007, again in an effort to slightly increase grip; however, the constructions are based off of the 2007 Kentucky and Chicagoland tire. This is the same tire spec that was run at the Homestead open tests and the Homestead race.
From Al Speyer, Executive Director, Firestone Racing: "Coming off of one of the most exciting motorsports weekends in recent memory, Firestone Racing is excited to get back on track at Kansas Speedway with our proven 2008 superspeedway tire spec. This tire is a new and improved version of last year's 1.5-mile oval specification, and it has performed well at both the Homestead open tests and race earlier this year. Superspeedway tires are the toughest for us to perfect, but we are pleased with the progress we have made for this season. The weather forecast is calling for moderate temperatures, so that bodes well for tire performance. With all of the cars and stars of the IndyCar Series back on one track, we expect to see a great race as drivers rely on their Firestone Firehawks to carry them through the last oval prior to the Indianapolis 500."
Firestone "Tire-ific" Move of the Race: This $10,000 prize will be awarded after each IndyCar Series race to the driver who best utilizes his or her Firestone tires to make a bold, dramatic move during the event. It could be relying on the Firehawks' great grip to execute a daring pass, or having the confidence in the tires' durability to run an extra stint on a set to improve position. After each race, Firestone Racing officials will submit the top three "Tire-ific" candidates to www.indycar.com, where fans will be able to cast their votes during the ensuing week to determine the winner. The winner from last week's Motegi race (nominees are Danica Patrick, Ryan Hunter-Reay and Scott Dixon) will be named in pre-race ceremonies Sunday.
