Dreyer & Reinbold Racing Qualifies 10th and 20th for the Road Runner Turbo Indy 300
Kansas City, Kansas (April 30, 2010) - Track time looked dismal today for Dreyer & Reinbold Racing as rain showers and thunderstorms postponed this morning's practice sessions. Luckily, the skies cleared and DRR drivers, Justin Wilson (No. 22 Charter Communications) and Mike Conway (No. 24 Dad's Root Beer), were both able to get the practice and qualifying time needed for the Road Runner Turbo Indy 300 in Kansas City, Kansas.
Conway will be making his second race appearance at the two-mile oval. This morning, he logged the laps that he needed and had the opportunity to practice in traffic to fully prepare for the race tomorrow. As qualifying rolled around, he clocked the tenth fastest time with 1:44.0622 seconds (210.336 mph) and will start on the outside of row.
This will mark his third time to the circuit and his 11th oval race. Last year, Conway qualified 16th for the race and finished 19th due to early contact. His best qualifying result on an oval was 11th (Milwaukee, Richmond) and his best finishing position was 8th at Iowa.
Wilson spent the morning getting his sea legs back. Today was the first time to return to an oval since last year's season finale in Miami. The Brit was able to record a number of laps and worked on getting the car right for qualifying. Although his No. 22 Charter Communications machine felt great to drive during the afternoon session, he was unable to get the speed that he needed out of it. As a result, he will start 20th for the Road Runner Turbo Indy 300.
This weekend will be the Brit's third time to compete at Kansas Speedway. In 2008, he qualified 22nd and finished in 9th place and in 2009 he started 17th and finished 14th. Since joining the IZOD IndyCar Series in 2008, Wilson has recorded five top-10 finishes (2008: Kansas-9th, Milwaukee-7th, Richmond-7th, 2009: Chicagoland-10th, Homestead-10th) on ovals. His first and only time to lead on an oval was for five laps at Kansas in 2008. Wilson's best qualifying position on an oval was 8th position at Kentucky in 2009.
What they have to say about the Road Runner Turbo Indy 300:
Justin Wilson, No. 22 Charter: "My Charter/Z-Line Designs qualifying car was really good and I could drive down deep right on the white line with minimal steering input. I can't believe we were not quicker. I'm going over the data with my engineers right now to see if there is any drag on the car and fix that. I'm looking forward to the race tomorrow and see if we can pick up positions."
Mike Conway, No. 24 Dad's Root Beer: "The car felt fine. There was just a little bit of scrub and I kept it down where I needed to keep it. I made a few small adjustments during the run and the car felt pretty comfortable. I'm really happy and I don't think I could have gotten much more out of the car. The first lap was really good and then I just kept getting more out of it after that. The Dad's Root Beer car seems to be handling well and I think that we have a good race car and that's the main thing for tomorrow."
