Yasukawa gains experience at Richmond test.
Super Aguri Fernandez Racing today concluded a successful test at Richmond International Raceway in Richmond, Virginia, in preparation for the SunTrust Indy Challenge on June 27, Round Seven of the IRL IndyCar Series. The Open Test, originally scheduled for yesterday, was extended through today due to inclement weather.
Roger Yasukawa posted a best lap of 17.1044 seconds (157.854 mph) on the fast .75-mile oval, only eight-tenths of a second off the fastest time set by Scott Dixon. Yasukawa is fresh off a 10th-place finish in the Indianapolis 500 this past weekend and currently leads the Rookie of the Year point standings. The next stop for Super Aguri Fernandez Racing is the Bombardier 500 at Texas Motor Speedway on June 7.
Roger Yasukawa, Driver - #55 Panasonic ARTA Dallara/Honda/Firestone:
"The test went okay. We were trying a lot of different things and at the end, we were concentrating on long runs to see how our setup would hold. We have a pretty good balance for the long runs which is important for the race. For outright speed, we still need to do a bit more work. This is a short track and it's fairly tricky so you really need to think about how to drive this track to find the right line. I was not 100 percent confident with the track and the car. Overall, I have a good picture which will help when we come back here for the race."
FAST FACTS: Will be making his fifth career IRL IndyCar Series start when the Bombardier 500 kicks off at Texas Motor Speedway on June 7-- currently leads Rookie of the Year standings and is 19th in the championship with 38 points-- began his career at the age of 12 in karts, competing in both the U.S. and Italy before moving up the racing ladder through Formula Vauxhall Junior and Formula Palmer Audi in England, and Formula Dodge competition in the United States-- entered the Barber Dodge Pro Series at the age of 21, earning Co-Rookie of the Year honors-- competed in the Atlantic series last year, claiming a win at Milwaukee and two additional podium finishes in a partial season of competition-- resides in West Hollywood, California.
Tom Anderson, Managing Director:
"I think the Panasonic team learned a lot about Richmond and we are looking forward to the race at the end of June. We needed to test here. The race is a two-day event and to take a rookie in without any track time would not have been very friendly. I am really glad we came. We did over 200 laps and learned a lot. I am very pleased with our results. It will be one heck of an exciting race here."
