ST. JAMES READY TO GO FAST ON FINAL WDWS TESTING DAY
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla., January 18, 1996 -- Lyn St. James and the Scandia/Simon Racing team worked with a variety of chassis setups today and head into Friday's last day of preseason testing at Walt Disney World Speedway ready to go fast.
"We did three different chassis setups, and at the end, we found one that's a good starting point," said St. James. "I'm in the ballpark with what I have to feel to go fast."
St. James' fastest lap of the day was 21.990 seconds, 163.710 miles per hour.
Dick Simon, the team's general manager and chief engineer, is due in town Friday, when St. James will try to "go fast."
"Dick will be here tomorrow and we hope the weather holds," said St. James. "I've felt more prepared going into races, but I certainly feel a lot better today than I did a week ago. Tomorrow's the last day we can run before the event, so it's an important day.
"On one-mile ovals, two or three tenths (of a second) can be 5-10 miles an hour...the incremental gains you make are big chunks in miles an hour.
"Ideally, I'd want to be in the 19s (second bracket), but it's hard to get that in one day."
Johnny O'Connell and the Cunningham Motorsports team arrived at WDWS and were preparing their car for the final day of testing Friday.
"It'll be good not to have a roof over my head again," joked O'Connell, the former IMSA Nissan factory sportscar driver.
At 10:20 a.m., Bill Tempero in the Tempero Racing entry did a half-spin at the exit of Turn 1, hit the wall with the left rear, came around and hit again with the front. Tempero was uninjured and returned to the track in a backup car. The car sustained minor front wing and left rear damage.
