SALAZAR HITS 164.285 MILES PER HOUR AT WALT DISNEY WORLD SPEEDWAY
ORLANDO, FLA., December 18, 1996 -- Eliseo Salazar turned a lap at 164.285 miles per hour Wednesday as he broke into the 21-second bracket for the first time on the one-mile oval at Walt Disney World Speedway. Salazar's lap, during a Goodyear tire test on the first day of Indy Racing League open testing in a Team Scandia Dallara/Aurora, registered on the United States Auto Club clocks at 21.913 seconds. Salazar ran 167 laps.
John Paul, Jr took his first ride in one of the new IRL cars, PDM Racing's Dallara/Aurora for 8 warm up laps at the end of the day.
ELISEO SALAZAR: "It went very well. We also did some long runs, 30-lap runs. I find the cars getting better and better. We never had one minor problem with the car, the chassis. They're getting quicker. The pole will be in the low 21s (21-second bracket) with 200 less horsepower. This is the first time we ran our own engine and this was a very conservative approach engine. I was expecting 2-2 1/2 seconds slower...1 1/2 (seconds) is nothing." # # #
PHOENIX, ARIZ., December 18, 1996 -- Davy Jones and Galles Racing continued a Goodyear tire test at Phoenix International Raceway Wednesday after running 175 laps Tuesday -- the second-most in a day by any team during winter testing.
DAVY JONES: "I'm really quite pleased with the car (a G Force/Aurora). I didn't really know what to expect with the time G Force had to build the car. It didn't arrive until last week (Dec. 10) and I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the craftsmanship in the car. We've gotten to the level to start making changes. It seems to be very reliable. It probably has a lot more downforce than I expected. We've really had a trouble-free test to this point. We've been keeping a cautious eye on everything." # # #
Andrea Toso, who heads Dallara's IRL project, recalled a phone call that he received after A.J. Foyt Enterprises had its first test with the new car at Walt Disney World Speedway with driver Scott Sharp. "Another team manager called and said, 'Congratulations on the test,'" Toso said. "Then he said, 'How many times did A.J. shout at you?' My answer was, 'Not yet.'" # # #
