VISION RACING COMPLETES FIRST DAY OF PRACTICE IN PREPARATION FOR THE WATKINS GLEN INDY GRAND PRIX
WATKINS GLEN, New York -- Heading into Saturday's qualifying session for the Watkins Glen Indy Grand Prix, Vision Racing and drivers, Tomas Scheckter and Ed Carpenter, feverishly lapped the 2.45-mile Watkins Glen International road course today for both IndyCar Series practice sessions. The Series is coming off a very warm and grueling 90th running of the Indianapolis 500, which featured a lightning fast 2.5-mile oval, whereas today the team took to the twists and turns of the season's first natural terrain road course; the change proved to be challenging.
Scheckter led the Vision Racing duo in the #2 Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone with the 15th fastest lap of the day at 129.338 mph. Carpenter logged a best speed of 127.602 mph which put him at 18th on the speed chart. With each session, both drivers continued to improve and the team is confident that tomorrow's practice and qualifying will be even better.
The team recorded a total of 78 laps between both the #2 (41 laps) and #20 (37 laps) Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone machine. A total of 19 IndyCars are competing this weekend and today those 19 entries logged a combined 754 laps. Saturday begins with another practice session 8:45 a.m. (EDT) and qualifying for the Watkins Glen Indy Grand Prix begins at 12:20 p.m. (EDT).
Tomas Scheckter -- #2 Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone
On practice sessions:
"We definitely aren't as quick as we'd like to be, but we are working on it and improving all of the time. The crew is working really hard and I'm confident that tomorrow we'll be even better. There is speed left in the car and we are going to work on getting that speed out of the car for tomorrow's qualifying."
Ed Carpenter -- #20 Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone
On practice sessions:
"It was okay. It's my first road course of the season since I didn't get to run at St. Pete. So I just am kind of picking up where I left off last year as this is the last road course race of last season. I've been knocking the rust off a little bit today and I started to get a little closer there at the end. I've got a long way to go, just as I did last year, but we'll just keep picking a way at it every time and eventually we'll be up there."
