Slippery Ride for Sharp Ends in Ninth Place
Scott Sharp scored his fourth top-10 finish of the season this afternoon in an eventful race day at Watkins Glen International Raceway. Under constantly changing weather conditions, blustery winds and temperatures hovering just above the 50º mark, Sharp overcame a slippery track to finish ninth in the IndyCar Series second visit to the permanent road course. Sharp, who started 14th based on combined practice times, dropped steadily back in the opening stages of the scheduled 60-lap race as he battled a severe lack of grip on the #8 Delphi machine due to cold temperatures. He ran mid-pack throughout most of the event, but the team looked poised for a strong finish when Sharp, running in eighth at the time with only six laps remaining, was one of only a handful of drivers that pitted for rain tires as rain looked eminent. Unfortunately, the strategy didn't pay off with only light raining falling at race end.
The IndyCar Series will return to action next weekend with the Bombardier Learjet 500 at Texas Motor Speedway.
Scott Sharp - #8 Delphi Panoz/Honda/Firestone:
"Wow! What a crazy day! These are days you always hear about and hope you never have. I don't think you could have any more change of conditions between wet when we started to a drying track to eventually a dry track and back to being wet. Certain parts of the track were damp, certain parts were not and it was a matter of just constantly catching the car. I really slid around quite a lot. We were certainly set up for the rain. We would have been better if it had rained longer or at the end of the race. We would have been in better shape. Even in the dry, I just really didn't have a lot of grip and slid around a lot. I'm not sure why that was but today was a day when you just really needed to persevere. The Delphi guys gave me great pit stops. We just needed to bring home points and that's what we were able to do."
