Poor weather scrapped qualifying at Watkins Glen, forcing Indy Racing League officials to set the grid using Friday's combined practice times. Helio Castroneves will start from the pole position with fellow Brazilian Tony Kanaan alongside.
Saturday's schedule was adjusted due to poor weather conditions which prevented the medical helicopter from landing at the track. Once the helicopter landed, the single session for the Indy Pro Series was used as their qualifying session, while the single IndyCar Series session was deemed as practice.
Tomas Scheckter and Eddie Cheever each turned 15 laps, the most of any driver, to take the top two positions on the day's speed chart. Felipe Giaffone was third driving the A.J. Foyt No. 14 entry.
With poor weather conditions today, and the promise of good weather for Sunday's race, most drivers opted to sit out the session out after turning a few laps.
"I learned nothing today on the track," said Scott Dixon, "I just scrubbed some tires."
Dario Franchitti recorded three laps while Sam Hornish only turned two.
Several teams spent the remainder of the session on pit road practicing static pit stops.
Although most drivers were disappointed that qualifying was canceled, Marco Andretti was all smiles. Andretti was confident that he would make the top-six shootout in qualifying, but he thought he might end up sixth. Using Friday's practice times, Andretti will start third. "I'm definitely happy that things worked out like they did," he said. "This definitely worked out in our favor."
Scott Dixon will start fourth followed by Dan Wheldon, Sam Hornish and Dario Franchitti.
