Matsuura Confident After Opening Practice at The Glen
It has been eight months since the IndyCar Series last turned a wheel on a permanent road course, but Kosuke Matsuura quickly returned to form. Despite a 12 th -place ranking at the end of the opening day of practice for the Watkins Glen Indy™ Grand Prix, Matsuura was pleased after setting his best time on a set of Firestone Firehawks which had run over 57 miles.
Matsuura has finished seventh or better in three of the four road/street course events held since last year, and finished sixth in the inaugural race at The Glen. He is currently sixth in the championship standings.
Marlboro Pole Qualifying featuring the Firestone Fast Six will be held tomorrow.
Kosuke Matsuura, #55 Panasonic ARTA Dallara/Honda/Firestone:
"The second session was a pretty good one. The first session, I had a little problem with the gearshift knob. It wouldn't come back to the center position. I had to push down then pull down to get back to the center position which made it difficult to drive especially when you are deep into the corner. We fixed the problem for the second session. We didn't have time to put on new tires this session but we improved by over one second from the first session. We had close to 20 laps on one set of tires. My car was pretty good on old tires and most of the drivers in the session put on sticker tires. If we had put on new tires, I think we would have been in the high 91's (seconds). We are getting competitive. My engineer Chris Finch did a great job. We will make a few changes tonight which should be helpful for tomorrow morning. I am little bit disappointed that we finished so far down in the first session and that put us in the first practice group and the track conditions are not as good. But, our car is getting competitive and I think we will be good in qualifying."
