FIRESTONE FIREHAWK FAST FACTS
Indy Racing League IndyCar Series Watkins Glen Indy Grand Prix presented by Argent Mortgage
Watkins Glen International, Watkins Glen, N.Y.
September 24-25 -- Round 16 of 17
Race Distance: 204 miles (60 laps around the 3.4-mile, 11-turn circuit).
Firehawk Race Tires Supplied: Firestone delivered 794 dry-condition and 352 wet-condition Firehawk race tires for use this weekend, all of which were produced at the Firestone Technical Center in Akron, Ohio.
Dry-condition tires ("slicks"): Each car receives eight sets of slicks (32 total tires) for the race weekend, to use as its team determines in the practice, qualifying and race sessions. Those cars that make the "Firestone Fast Six" for the final segment of qualifying receive an additional set for that session only. The Firestone race tire development team has chosen its most durable road-course specification, the same spec used at the Watkins Glen open test in June.
Wet-condition tires ("rains"): Firestone supplies each car up to four sets of grooved-tread rain tires (16 total tires) per race weekend on road and street courses, as needed. Teams can provide two additional sets of the same-spec rain tire that may have been distributed at an earlier race or test. The most durable road-course rain spec was selected for this weekend.
Quote from Al Speyer, Executive Director, Firestone Racing: "Everyone at Firestone is really looking forward to seeing IndyCar competition on this great track again. It's a wonderfully competitive and historic venue -- a perfect road-course addition to the IndyCar Series schedule. Although road courses are still relatively new to the IRL, our company has had quite a bit of experience with them over the years and we've brought a tried and true spec for this weekend's race. We used it during the open test here a couple of months ago and it performed exceptionally -- we expect no less this weekend."
Firestone Performance Award: Normally, to commemorate Firestone's status as the only tire supplier to participate in every IndyCar Series event in IRL history, this $10,000 bonus is awarded to the driver leading the lap corresponding to the cumulative number of races conducted to that point -- 119 this weekend. But since there are just 60 laps in Sunday's main event, Firestone will offer its Performance Award to the driver leading when the 119th mile is turned on lap 35. In pre-race ceremonies Sunday, Tony Kanaan of Andretti Green Racing will receive the $10,000 Firestone Performance Award for leading lap 118 at Chicagoland Speedway two weeks ago.
