SPARTA, Ky., Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2002 -- Two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Al Unser Jr. will return to Indy Racing League competition at the Belterra Casino Indy 300 Aug. 11 at Kentucky Speedway.
Unser, who entered a treatment center July 18 for treatment of a substance-abuse problem, will return to drive the No. 7 Corteco/Bryant Dallara/Chevrolet/Firestone. Rookie Tony Renna, who subbed for Unser at Nashville Superspeedway and Michigan International Speedway, finishing 10th and fourth, respectively, has been switched from Unser's car to a third Kelley Racing entry, the No. 78 Kruse Special Dallara/Chevrolet/Firestone.
Red Bull Cheever Racing also has added a third car, with rookie Buddy Rice driving the No. 53 Red Bull Cheever Racing Dallara/Infiniti/Firestone. Rice finished second to his Red Bull Cheever Racing rookie teammate Tomas Scheckter July 28 at the Michigan Indy 400.
Vitor Meira, the 2000 South American Formula 3 champion, has been named driver of the No. 2 Menards/Johns Manville/Pittsburgh Paints Dallara/Chevrolet/Firestone. Meira, a native of Brasilia, Brazil, replaces Mark Dismore who has driven for Team Menard the last five races.
It will be Meira's first Indy Racing League start. He passed his rookie test July 31 at Kentucky Speedway.
Treadway and Associates Racing has entered Will Langhorne in the No. 55 Grill 2 Go/Sam Schmidt Motorsports Indy Car G Force/Chevrolet/Firestone. Langhorne, who will be making his first IRL start, passed his rookie test June 10 at Texas Motor Speedway.
The entry list for the Belterra Casino Indy 300 now consists of 25 cars, with four Indy Racing League champions, four Indianapolis 500 champions and seven rookies.
The Belterra Casino Indy 300 starts at 1:30 p.m. (EDT) and will be broadcast live on ABC and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Radio Network.
