Fontana, CA: Anthony Lazzaro recorded the 6th best overall speed of 220.575 mph in the #99 Sam Schmidt Motorsports Dallara/Chevrolet entry at the Indy Racing Leagues much heralded Test in the West. Luyendyk, in the #5 Treadway-Hubbard Racing G-Force/Chevrolet entry, retired early with engine troubles. Luyendyk's top speed was 215.20 mph.
"It was a good test," said Lazzaro. "We had some typical new car blues in the morning, but we got them worked out and posted a good speed this afternoon. The IRL package makes for some extremely competitive racing and I'm really looking forward to this season."
Lazzaro will drive the Sam Schmidt Motorsports Dallara/Chevrolet in the 2002 IRL season, and Schmidt has contracted Treadway Racing to manage the on-track operations for his team.
"The car felt good, the motor just didn't want to pull," said Luyendyk. "I took my time getting up to speed and I feel really good in the car. The car was really hooked up, but we were seven mph slower than Anthony in a straight line. We'll get the motor issue worked out and we'll be right up front where we usually are."
The team will test in Phoenix February 8-9 as part of the IRL's Test in the West. Rick Treadway will take over the driving duties in the #5 Treadway-Hubbard Racing entry for this test.
Luyendyk will drive the #5 Treadway-Hubbard entry in the Indianapolis 500.
