FORT WORTH, Texas (June 11, 2005) - Team 7-Eleven driver Tony Kanaan ran strong all night long and posted a solid third-place effort Saturday at the Indy Racing League® IndyCar® Series Bombardier Learjet 500.
Starting from the 13th position, Kanaan worked the Team 7-Eleven car into the top five within 20 laps and had the lead by lap 40. He led a total of 62 laps on the evening, but his car wasn't quite strong enough to hold off the challenge of eventual winner Tomas Scheckter, as Kanaan surrendered the lead with just nine laps remaining.
Scheckter earned the victory with Sam Hornish Jr second followed by Kanaan. Scott Sharp finished fourth and Helio Castroneves placed fifth.
Through six events, Kanaan resides second in the driver point standings, 65 points shy of teammate Dan Wheldon.
Next up for Kanaan and the rest of the IndyCar Series teams will be the SunTrust Indy Challenge at Richmond International Raceway on Saturday, June 25. The event will be televised live by ESPN2, beginning at 7:30 p.m. (EDT). It can also be heard live by XM Satellite Radio subscribers by tuning into Extreme XM, channel 152.
Tony Kanaan, #11 Team 7-Eleven Dallara/Honda/Firestone:
"Team 7-Eleven had a good run tonight. I don't think we quite had the car to win the race, but we fought all race long, led quite a few laps and finished in the top-three. My guys did a great job in the pits tonight and helped keep me up front. It was just Scheckter's night; he could run my lap times on the high side while I was running down low. Now we can go to one of my favorite tracks at Richmond."
Kim Green, President, Andretti Green Racing:
"This was a good run for Team 7-Eleven. We've had some frustrating races this year, but tonight Tony drove a great race. Our strategy was good, we had some very good pit stops tonight and Tony did a good job of keeping the Team 7-Eleven car up front. We just didn't have quite the package to beat the Chevy and in the end we didn't have anyone that would run with us. If we had, we might have finished at least second. This is always a tough place to race and it's good to come away with solid points."
