FORT WORTH-DALLAS (June 7, 2000) - Fans watching the pre-race show for the Saturday, June 10 Casino Magic 500 will witness a piece of history as the United States Cavalry rides again.
To help celebrate the 225th Anniversary of the U.S. Army, the 1st Cavalry Division Horse Cavalry Detachment, based at Fort Hood, Texas, will perform drills from the 1883 Manual of Cavalry Tactics along the front straightaway of the speedway. Outfitted in authentic 1880's cavalry equipment, including uniforms, saddles, firearms and sabers straight out of the Old West. Much of the equipment is original, dating back to the 1870's.
Since it's inception in 1972, the detachment has been making regular appearances at numerous local events, parades and rodeos including two Presidential Inaugural Parades and the 1984 World's Fair. The group includes 30 troopers and horses, an 1878 Army supply wagon and an 1841 cavalry support cannon. The group's Mounted Drill and Weapons Demonstration will showcase maneuvers at the trot, walk and gallop with the weapons portion demonstrating uses of the cavalry saber, Colt .45 revolver, and the Springfield carbine.
The special pre-race show will also include the cutting edge cavalry of the present and future with maneuvers from the Army's Apache helicopters of the 20th and 21st centuries.
The gates will open at 3:00 p.m. for Saturday's Casino Magic 500. The pre-race show will begin at around 4:50 p.m. and will last approximately 30-40 minutes.
