FORT WORTH-DALLAS, February 17, 1997
'97 Time to saddle up! For the first time Indy-style cars are rolling at Texas Motor Speedway. Firestone is conducting tire testing with Hemelgarn Racing featuring 1996 Indy 500 winner Buddy Lazier and Team Menard with 1996 Indy pole sitter Tony Stewart. Test sessions opened this afternoon and will continue through Wednesday. Firestone's work is in preparation for the Longhorn 500 Indy Racing League event scheduled for June. 7.
"Everything went as expected for the first time out on a new track," said Firestone senior Indy project engineer Page Mader. "We worked on set-up and basically just got the cars shook down. We'll hit full stride tomorrow looking at various compounds and constructions.
"There's a lot of information to gather the next couple of sessions. Not only is this a new track for us, it's also the first time these cars will run at night so we'll have to consider evening temperatures and many other variables. This is a magnificent facility - it's going to be fun to race here."
Track work by Lazier and Stewart was minimal this afternoon. Over his first 12 laps Stewart averaged 188 mph. All of the IRL's 1997 equipment is on display as Stewart is piloting a G-Force car powered by Oldsmobile Aurora. Lazier is behind the wheel of a Dallara chassis with a Nissan Infiniti engine.
