Qualifying Notes Texas Motor Speedway
Fort Worth, Texas - Eddie Cheever, Jr., qualified his #51 Team Cheever/The Children's Beverage Group Dallara/Infiniti/Goodyear 5th for Saturday evening's Pep Boys Indy Racing League Longhorn 500. Cheever lapped the 1.5-mile Texas superspeedway at a top speed of 213.430 mph in 24.542 seconds. He will start the race from the 3rd row, his highest qualifying spot in the Pep Boys Indy Racing League since qualifying 4th at the Indy 500 in 1996. With the 5th place qualifying spot, Team Cheever gives Infiniti its highest place on the starting grid since Roberto Guerrero qualified 10th at the 1998 Pikes Peak race.
The Longhorn 500 presented by MCI WorldCom will air live on FOX Sports Net on Saturday, June 12th at 7:30pm (EDT).
On Qualifying "We are a team that has always concentrated on our race day set up versus qualifying, so to be have qualified our #51 Children's Beverage Group Dallara/Infiniti/Goodyear in the 5th spot feels great. Put it another way, we're normally a big problem for the rest of the field when we start 18th; imagine the trouble we're gonna cause starting from fifth!"
On Infiniti "It is great to see the Infiniti Group finally see a return on the months of hard work with us. Things are really starting to come together. It is nice to see their smiles."
On the Texas Motor Speedway "This is a great facility that has all the makings of a great entertainment center for the fans. Eddie Gossage does a great job promoting our races and has made Texas our second most important track that we race at. I'm really glad that we race here twice a season!"
On Tomorrow's IROC Race in Michigan "I leave for Michigan at 6am Friday morning and I'll be back in the car here for the 5pm final practice. It's gonna be an extremely difficult race...much more than Daytona and Talladega. This will be the first time that tire wear has come into the picture. It is going to be something trying to stretch the tires 50 laps. If you run that right front too hard the first 25, you won't be there for the final 25."
