I put in the clutch, the gear engaged, the car lurched forward, and it died. I don't know what I have to do to win a race. The Red Bull Infiniti was unbelievable. The crew really worked hard. They deserved this win. We just have to move on and get them at Colorado."
EDDIE CHEEVER JR. (No. 51 Red Bull Cheever Racing Dallara/Infiniti/Firestone): "Once again we had the fastest cars on track, and once again we failed to execute. Things have to turn in our favor soon."
FELIPE GIAFFONE (No. 21 Hollywood Mo Nunn Racing G Force/Chevrolet/Firestone): "We lost the telemetry, and they didn't know how much fuel I had in the car. We were very conservative and came in earlier than the other guys, so we were losing a lot there. The car was very good, very stout, but I wish we had a little more power or were a little bit faster because 90 percent of the race I was flat out all the way around. But I think it was good. We started 19th and finished fifth." (About Pikes Peak): "I think it should be good. I like Pikes Peak as a track. We haven't tested there yet, but I think my team will give me a good car there, as well."
RAUL BOESEL (No. 2 Menards/Johns Manville/Pittsburgh Paints Dallara/Chevrolet/ Firestone): "We had a wheel bearing (problem). I put myself in a position to challenge. We were running in the lead pack and then 10 or 15 laps to go, it broke. It's a pity shame because I was there, and I was going to challenge for the lead."(About Pikes Peak): "It's a whole different ballgame. It's a short oval, and we just need to see if we can have better luck. I get to jell with the team more and more, so I think good things will happen."
ALEX BARRON (No. 44 Rayovac Blair Racing Dallara/Chevrolet/Firestone): "Racing under the lights was what I expected. It was fun. Tonight was fun. I wish we could race more often under the lights. Racing under the lights gives it more character because we do so many day races. The car started going faster at the end of the race when it cooled off. We had a good run today. We had good pit stops today, finished in the top 10 and moved up in points." (About Pikes Peak): "I'm skeptical about Pikes Peak. I have not seen the track before in person or on television. I'm getting in on Friday early and will go around the track with John (Dick, the engineer)."
SAM HORNISH JR. (No. 4 Pennzoil Panther Dallara/Chevrolet/Firestone): "I think his car pushed up into me. This is going to happen anywhere, but when you have a run on someone you need to make sure there is room. I can't really explain it."
SCOTT SHARP (No. 8 Delphi Dallara/Chevrolet/Firestone): "It was a tough day. The Delphi car ran really strong early in the race, bringing us from the back of the field to the front. We thought we had a shot at winning this race again, but then a CV joint broke. The guys did a great job replacing it and getting us back in the race. Hopefully, the points we earned will keep us in the championship race."
JOHN DE VRIES (No. 18 Norwalk Furniture Dallara/Chevrolet/Firestone): "I felt pretty good. We went around and around and did the best we could to stay flat. We came in 11th. I feel good. We'll get ready for Colorado."
BUDDY LAZIER (No. 91 Coors Light/Life Fitness/Tae-Bo/Delta Faucet Dallara/Chevrolet/ Firestone): "We had a great night, we just got out of pit sequence. I suppose if we had extra laps, we would be in a great position. Our strategy was good, but I guess the other teams got better fuel mileage. Overall, it was a good effort by my Coors Light team. My car felt good. I was flat out. I never lifted from start to finish. We're looking forward to Pikes Peak."
SHIGEAKI HATTORI (No. 12 EPSON Dallara/Infiniti/Firestone): "It was good. The car was good, so I am happy. All the guys did a good job."
LAURENT REDON (No. 34 Mi-Jack Dallara/Infiniti/Firestone): "At the start of the race, we had understeer in traffic. In the beginning I was trying to pass people on the inside, but I was losing position. I changed my strategy and passed people on the outside. During the first pit stop, we made some changes to the car, and it was getting better. It still had some understeer, but it was getting to be a pretty good car. During the second pit stop, we made some more adjustments, and the car was perfect. We had one of the quickest cars on the track, and we could have won this race. When I came in for the third stop, I felt like something was wrong in the rear. I don't quite know what it was. The race just stopped there, and it's a shame because we ran 80 percent of the race. All we had to do was finish the race, and nobody could have contended us because we had such a good car. I'm sorry for everybody, the crew and my sponsors. Now it's on to Colorado, and we can win at Pikes Peak."
RICHIE HEARN (No. 99 Grill 2 Go Sam Schmidt Motorsports Indy Car Dallara/ Chevrolet/Firestone): "We're just glad to come back out with a ninth-place finish. We're continuing the momentum we've had this year so far and going on to bigger and better things at Colorado."
GREG RAY (No. 11 A.J. Foyt Racing/Harrah's Dallara/Chevrolet/Firestone): "We had some handling problems with the car early, and we finally got it sorted out by mid-race, but by then we got a lap down. Then we were gambling on fuel strategy because we were out of sequence on our pitstops, and we ended up running out of fuel, so it was a long, frustrating night. But Airton and A.J. had a great night, a great race. That's a big boost for the Harrah's team. Hats off to them for making it so exciting at the end. I want to be a part of it at the next race."
ROBBIE BUHL (No. 24 Team Purex/Aventis/Dreyer & Reinbold Racing G Force/Infiniti/ Firestone): "Tonight we were doing what we wanted to do. We moved well through traffic and could run with the lead pack. We were going faster at the end, but were a little positive on the front. We knew we could deal with it. Sure, it's frustrating not to finish here after the great cars we had at Texas last year, but that's racing. We just don't worry about our motors. We've been very happy with Infiniti and happy with Tom Walkinshaw this year, and this is not the norm."
BILLY BOAT (No. 98 CURB Records Dallara/Chevrolet/Firestone): "The CURB/Agajanian/Boat Indy racing team wasn't the fastest car on the racetrack tonight, but we had a good car in the draft, and that's always the key here. I could run on the top, I could run on the bottom, I could run right behind another car. That was really the key for us. We couldn't pull out or pass real easy, we couldn't lead, but we could hang with the draft and that's the secret. We just had to play the chess game and work our way up. Unfortunately, I think we took a little bit too much fuel there at the end, and we kind of let those guys get away from us, but overall this was our best performance so far this year. The CURB Records team continues to improve, and I'm really happy with the team. They've done a great job in the pits and mechanically with the race car. We'll continue to improve and work our way up the point standings."
HELIO CASTRONEVES (No. 3 Marlboro Team Penske Dallara/Chevrolet/Firestone): "At the beginning of the race, I was not having fun, but by the end I was having a great time. The track was changing, and the car was not handling well. There was a lot of rubber on the track as the race went on, and my car had a huge understeer, but that's the price we pay with this being our first race at Texas Motor Speedway. We worked on the Marlboro Team Penske car during our pit stops, and it was awesome by the end. The guys did a great last pit stop, and I was able to take the lead. Unfortunately, fifth gear was too tall, which was my fault since I chose it, and there was nothing I could do to keep the lead. The good thing is we are still in the lead in the championship. We need to keep our focus as we head to Pikes Peak and continue to put points on the board."
GIL DE FERRAN (No. 6 Marlboro Team Penske Dallara/Chevrolet/Firestone): "The Marlboro Team Penske car was performing very well at the start of the race, and it was great in traffic. Unfortunately, we lost the gearbox when we came out of the pits on our first stop. The crew did a fantastic job repairing the car, and they replaced the entire gearbox. It's a shame we had that trouble because we had a really good car tonight. But we were able to climb back from 21st to finish 16th, so we earned some very valuable points in the championship"
