INDY TIRE TESTING AT TEXAS MOTOR SPEEDWAY
FORT WORTH-DALLAS (February 12, 1997) -- For the first time the roar of Indy cars will echo through Texas Motor Speedway as Firestone conducts tire testing February 17, 18 & 19. The work is in preparation for the Longhorn 500 Indy Racing League (IRL) event scheduled for the speedway June 7.
Setting the pace for Firestone will be the winner of the 1996 Indy 500, Buddy Lazier and Team Menard's Tony Stewart, who dominated the IRL's first race in Orlando last month before being sidelined by mechanical gremlins.
"We're excited to have the Indy cars running at Texas Motor Speedway," said speedway Vice President and General Manager Eddie Gossage. "This is another first for our facility and there's the added attraction of having two of the IRL's toop drivers present. We've seen the NASCAR Winston Cup cars work here, now we get a preview of our other big race weekend this year."
Firestone will debut a new tire at Texas Motor Speedway. The updated Firehawk superspeedway radial will be similar to the one used at Indianapolis last year.
"We'll be looking for an initial set-up," said Firestone Motorsports Director Al Speyer. "We want to get a baseline and come back later to fine tune. A key part of our evaluation will be the performance on the dual 8 and 24 degree banking which is unique to Texas Motor Speedway. With the new regulations reducing horsepower, we expect the cars to run fine high."
Firestone will obtain a full read from its testing as all of the Indy Racing League's equipment will be utilized. Lazier will pilot a Dallara chassis with a Nissan Infiniti engine and Stewart will be behind the wheel of a G-Force car powered by Oldsmobile Aurora.
