DISMORE WINS FIRST IRL RACE 1999 Pep Boys Indy Racing League Championship - Round 11 Mall.Com 500 Texas Motor Speedway / Fort Worth, Texas Race Report -- Sunday, October 17, 1999
NOTES AND QUOTES: Kelley Racing driver Mark Dismore won his first Pep Boys Indy Racing League race today at the 1.5-mile Texas Motor Speedway. Dismore qualified 2nd, led on three separate occasions, and ended the day with a victory for his #28 MCI WorldCom team. Dismore started the weekend in 11th in points, but moved into a tie for 10th on Saturday with the 2 points he earned for his qualifying effort. The race win elevated Mark to 3rd in the final championship point standings.
Teammate Scott Sharp, piloting the #8 Delphi Automotive Systems car, finished the race in 19th position. A mid-race incident with Sam Schmidt may have contributed to a mechanical failure that ended Scott's day. Scott ends the season in 8th place in the championship. Sharp had a mathmatical chance of capturing the Pep Boys IRL Championship entering the final round of competition, but Greg Ray finished the race 3rd to win the title.
#28 Mark Dismore, MCI WorldCom/Dallara/Oldsmobile/Goodyear: "I am thrilled! It's been a long time we've been looking to put the MCI WorldCom car into victory circle. I am so proud of my guys. We've had some tough times, but they really pulled together and worked their tails off. I want to thank everyone who helped me get here. We've had a lot of chances before, but things just didn't fall into place. They did tonight and I'm just so happy to finally give Tom & Jim Kelley the win we've been trying to get for so long. Maybe things are starting to fall my way and we can take the momentum into the off-season and next year. I can't wait to get started on next season."
#8 Scott Sharp, Delphi Automotive Systems/Dallara/Oldsmobile/Goodyear: "We had a busy day out there. We were running strong and looked to be in contention the whole time. We were biding out time, waiting to see how things were going to turn out. Unfortunately, we got caught up in a situation with Sam (Schmidt). We were able to stay on the lead lap while we made repairs, but lost a motor several laps later. We really had an up and down year. I want to congratulate Mark on his win. It was a great day for Mark and the Kelleys. I am ready to get to work on next year. We've proven we have what it takes to win races and go for the championship. Next year it will be our turn."
