Race Distance: 300 miles or 482.8 kilometers (200 laps around the 1.5-mile oval).
Firehawk Race Tires Supplied: Firestone delivered 796 Firehawk racing radials for use this weekend. All were produced at the Firestone Technical Center in Akron, Ohio. Per IndyCar Series regulations, each entered car receives up to eight sets of tires (32 total) to be used at the team's discretion throughout the practice, qualifying and race sessions. The tire specification that Firestone engineers have chosen for this weekend's competition is one recently introduced at Chicagoland Speedway featuring a compound formula for the left-side tires that was newly designed to deliver increased grip. The new tires played an integral role in that race's thrilling side-by-side racing which produced the closest 1-2-3 finish in IndyCar Series history. The compound on the right-side tires is the same as the specification run earlier this season at Texas Motor Speedway, with slight adjustments to the construction.
Stagger Helps the Cars Go 'Round: Firestone engineers purposely design the right rear tire to have a circumference slightly larger than that of the left rear tire for oval competition. The size differential is minor - just 0.45 of an inch this weekend - but the effect, called "stagger", helps the IndyCars turn left more naturally and smoothly - and decreases the stresses on car and driver alike.
Quote from Al Speyer, Executive Director, Firestone Racing: "What an exciting season this has been. These drivers have kept us on the edge of our seats all year, and I'm sure it will be no different this weekend at Texas. We're confident that we've given them a tire this weekend that will allow them to run wherever they want or need to, which should produce another one of the exciting finishes that we've become accustomed to seeing. Like many others, we are anxious to see who ultimately wins the 2003 championship. But in our minds all of the IndyCar drivers are champions in their own right, having driven hard and fast all season long, delivering the fans some of the best racing action we've ever seen. We also take pride in knowing that all of the IRL drivers and the eventual champion have relied on Firestone Firehawks throughout the championship season."
The Official Tire of the IRL: Firestone is the exclusive tire supplier to the Indy Racing League for both the IndyCar and Infiniti Pro series. The IPS season concludes this weekend as well with the last of its 12-race season taking place Saturday at Texas Motor Speedway.
