Facility opened in 1997. Texas Motor Speedway is North America's second-largest sports facility and the third-largest in the world. The speedway has permanent seating for 154,861 and a total capacity of 200,000. The facility also includes 194 luxury skyboxes and the Lone Star Tower condominium and office complex. Texas Motor Speedway covers 950 acres, including a 23-acre lake. A state-of-the-art, permanent Musco Lighting system, which uses mirrors to simulate daylight without glare and shadows, is used to illuminate night events, including the Longhorn 500, at the track.

THE RACE: This is the third consecutive year that this Pep Boys Indy Racing League event has taken place at Texas Motor Speedway. The inaugural Pep Boys Indy Racing League event at the track, in 1997, was the first Indy-style race ever conducted at night. Arie Luyendyk won the race; Tony Stewart won the pole. Stewart won the PPG Pole for the second consecutive year in 1998; Billy Boat won the race.

RACE NOTES: Three Indianapolis 500 winners are entered in this event: 1999 champion Kenny Brack, 1998 champion Eddie Cheever Jr. and 1996 champion Buddy Lazier.

This race has a strong Texas connection. Team Menard driver Greg Ray lives in Plano. Ray started on the middle of the front row for the second consecutive year at Indianapolis. The two-car team fielded by four-time Indianapolis 500 champion A.J. Foyt is based in Houston. 1999 Indianapolis 500 winner Kenny Brack and Billy Boat drive for Foyt. John Hollansworth Jr. of Dallas drives the #42 pcsave.com-Lycos Dallara/Aurora/Firestone for TeamXtreme Racing, based in Rockwall. Three of TeamXtreme's owners have strong Texas connections. Mike Erwin owns and operates Lake Kiowa Realtors in northern Texas, Rick Sharp owns DFW Insulation, a commercial insulation contractor headquartered in Dallas, and Stan Stanley, former CEO of Professional Service Industries, an engineering consulting company, is retired and lives in Gainesville. Jack and Allan Pagan, the father-and-son owners of Pagan Racing, live in Corpus Christi. Pagan Racing fields the car for points leader Jeff Ward.

Three Pep Boys Indy Racing League Rookies are entered in this event: Scott Harrington, John Hollansworth Jr. and Robby McGehee. Hollansworth was presented the American Dairy Association of Indiana Fastest Rookie of the Year Award on May 25 for being the fastest rookie to qualify for the Indianapolis 500. McGehee was honored May 31 at the Victory Celebration as the Bank One Rookie of the Year for the 83rd Indianapolis 500.

Here's more proof of the highly competitive racing in the Pep Boys Indy Racing League: A race winner hasn't started on the front row since Billy Boat won this event last year from the No. 2 starting spot. The winners of the 10 races since then have started third or lower.

Billy Boat, driver for four-time Indianapolis 500 winner A.J. Foyt, has the best average finishing position, 1.5, of any Pep Boys Indy Racing League driver for this event. As a rookie, Boat finished second in the inaugural event and won last year's race.

Scott Goodyear tends to favor the number four. Goodyear drives the #4 Pennzoil Panther G Force/Aurora/Goodyear, has finished fourth in this event in 1997 and 1998 and is fourth in total earnings for the 1999 Pep Boys Indy Racing League season.

SERIES NOTES: All engines in the Pep Boys Indy Racing League will be required to operate at a maximum of 10,000 rpm beginning at this event and continuing throughout the rest of the 1999 season. This follows the reduction in rpm from 10,500 in 1998 to 10,300 at the beginning of 1999. The required reduction in rpm, controlled by a "rev limiter", will result in reduced speeds produced by the Indy Racing cars without jeopardizing handling. Engine revs are controlled electronically by Pep Boys Indy Racing League technical officials. Teams are not capable of manipulating the "rev limiters." One official can program an engine's electronic control unit in approximately five minutes.

The Suspension & Wheel Management System (SWEMS) will be required on every car competing at the Longhorn 500 presented by MCI WorldCom. The system was used for the first time during the 83rd Indianapolis 500. Pep Boys Indy Racing League officials along with car constructors Dallara, G Force and Riley & Scott have worked vigorously to minimize the possibilities of wheel assemblies becoming detached during high-speed accidents. The SWEMS principle utilizes multiple restraints attached at multiple points to a car's chassis and suspension. The restraints are made of FIA-approved Zylon. This material, with its high-tensile properties and its wound construction (opposed to woven), has a breaking strength of five tons.

Jeff Ward enters the Longhorn 500 as the Pep Boys Indy Racing League points leader. Ward gained the top spot after finishing second at the 83rd Indianapolis 500. Ward has finished in the top three in all 1999 Pep Boys Indy Racing League events, posting one third and two second-place finishes. The only top-three finishing position Ward has yet to claim is a win. Ward's first career victory could come at the Longhorn 500 with new primary sponsor Yahoo! and associate sponsor Merchant Online for the Pagan Racing entry.
