QUALIFYING Notes & Features

Fort Worth, Texas - Eddie Cheever, Jr. qualified his #51 The Children's Beverage Group Dallara/Goodyear/Infiniti 20th in today's Pep Boys Indy Racing League qualifier. Cheever lapped the 1.5-mile superspeedway in 24.625 seconds at an average speed of 212.711 mph. Cheever's time was .387 of a second off the pole sitter, Greg Ray. He will start Sunday's 208-lap/312-mile race from the 10th row.

"This is the quickest time we've run by ourselves. I'm glad that we've gotten through the last two days without the engine problems we experienced from Vegas. The car is working very well in traffic and that is going to be extremely important in tomorrow's race. It's going to be like a race in Talladega lift and I guarantee you, you will be in BIG trouble." - Eddie Cheever, Jr.

TEAM FEATURES Battle For Long Distance Award Heats Up Eddie Cheever and Robbie Buhl are the leading contenders for the $50,000 Bonus presented to the driver who wins the MCI WorldCom Long Distance Award the most during the season. The MCI award is presented at each Indy Racing event to the driver who gains the most positions from start to finish. Both drivers have won the award at two races this season: Cheever at the season opener at Disney (where he went on to win the race) and August's race in Pike Peak.

Like Owner, Like Mechanic. Eddie Cheever isn't the only one at Team Cheever who knows what it is like to go 230+ mph. Team fabricator, Gary Frost, will be preparing his 1966 Mustang Fast Back, October 20th-23rd, to attempt to hold onto his 1998 Bonneville Land Speed Record of 233m.p.h. Having started the family tradition 10 years ago with his father, the Frost Family now holds three separate World Land Speed Records on the salt flats of Bonneville (1995, 1997, and 1998).

TELEVISION COVERAGE The 500 race will air on ABC Sports at 4pm EDT on October 17th.
