Rice qualifies 20th on rainy day at Texas

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (June 5, 2003) - On a rainy opening day at the Bombardier 500, qualfiying took place as scheduled after a shortened day of practice. Buddy Rice currently holds the IRL IndyCar Series track record at Texas Motor Speedway with a lap of 222.501 mph set in last year's Chevy 500. Today he qualified 20th with the No. 52 Red Bull Cheever Racing Dallara/Chevrolet/Firestone with a lap of 24.7288 seconds, 211.476 mph.

"We are focusing on our race trim right now so we have another solid car," Rice said. "We want to get another solid finish for our points. That's all we're really worried about right now, not so much about qualifying. This is the first time this year I have returned to a track where I have raced before. With the rain we had today, and the limited track time that helps me get up to speed quicker. It will be quite a bit different from last Fall because the race is at night time."
