Patience, traffic are keys for team 7-Eleven's Kanaan heading into Saturday showdown at Texas

FT. WORTH, Texas (June 6, 2003) -- Starting from the fourth position, Team 7- Eleven driver Tony Kanaan won't see much traffic when the green flag flies over the Bombardier 500k Saturday night at Texas Motor Speedway. But, before the night is through Kanaan knows he will deal with traffic in masses. And, he knows that how he deals with it will be one of the keys to a successful run in Round 5 of the Indy Racing League (IRL) IndyCar^Ù Series.

Kanaan worked through two practice sessions on Friday afternoon in the #11 Team 7-Eleven Dallara/Honda/Firestone on the 1.5-mile high-banked oval and proved to be very quick. He was fastest in the opening 45-minute session this afternoon -- circling the speedway at 217.884 miles per hour. Kanaan then worked in traffic during the final 30-minute stint, posting a lap of 217.783 miles per hour, which ranked him ninth on the speed chart.

Following Kanaan during the first session of the day was Kenny Brack (217.478 miles per hour) and Al Unser, Jr. (217.381). The top three in the final workout of the day were Felipe Giaffone (220.574), Tora Takagi (219.916) and Scott Dixon (219.471).

Saturday night's race -- the first night race ever for Andretti Green Racing -- is slated to go green at 7:21 p.m. (CDT) and will air live on ESPN. ESPN2 will broadcast a pre-race show at 11 a.m. CDT.

TONY KANAAN, #11 TEAM 7-ELEVEN DALLARA/HONDA/FIRESTONE:

(WHAT IS THE KEY FOR YOU TOMORROW NIGHT?) "I need to be consistent and make it to the end. We just need to get the most points out of this race that we can. I'm not completely happy with the car right now, but we'll be OK. We're going to have to make it better. It's comfortable, but it's not the way I want it right now."

KIM GREEN, PRESIDENT, ANDRETTI GREEN RACING:

"I suspect you're going to spend a lot of the race around other race cars -- a lot of side-by-side running -- so, having a car that can draft up behind and then be able to move around people is going to be one of the keys. Certainly, one of the things that will be extremely important in this race will be good spotters and we've got the best. They're doing a great job. Beyond that, you will need -- as usual -- really good pit stops, perseverance and patience." - AGR -
