Helio Castroneves And Roger Penske Receive Borgwarner Trophies
On Wednesday, January 16 Marlboro Team Penske driver and 2001 Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves and Team Owner Roger Penske attended the 2001 Automotive News World Congress Gala Dinner in Dearborn, Michigan. At the Gala, Castroneves was presented with the BorgWarner Championship Driver's Trophy and Penske received the BorgWarner Team Owner's Trophy.
The BorgWarner Championship Driver's Trophy is presented each year to the winner of the Indianapolis 500 and is a replica of the BorgWarner Indianapolis 500 Trophy - a trophy that has been associated with the "Greatest Spectacle in Racing" since 1936. The replica has become affectionately known as the "Baby Borg" as it is only 14 inches high and weighs a mere five pounds.
The BorgWarner Championship Driver's Trophy was introduced in 1988, so that each winner of the Indianapolis 500 would have a memento from his victory at the Brickyard. The real BorgWarner Trophy, which includes replica faces of each driver who has won the race since 1911, is put on permanent display at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame Museum immediately after it is presented in Victory Circle. The day after the Indianapolis 500, a mold of the winning driver's face is taken so that a cast can be made and applied to the trophy; which is why the official presentation takes place in January.
"It was an honor to receive the BorgWarner Championship Driver's Trophy last week," said Castroneves. "Winning the Indianapolis 500 has meant a lot to me both professionally and personally, so I was really excited that I could be there to receive the trophy. When I looked at the trophy I was amazed at how much the replica of my face looks like me, it's really great! I can't wait to go to Indy and see the trophy in the museum to see my face along side some of the greatest drivers in racing history. I also enjoyed being back in Detroit for the Gala, as it was where I earned my first career Champ car win the first year I raced with Marlboro Team Penske (2000). I'm really looking forward to the 2002 IRL season and you never know - I just might be back next year to receive the trophy for the 2002 Indianapolis 500."
The first Championship Driver's Trophy went to current Marlboro Team Penske Team Advisor Rick Mears after his 1988 Indianapolis 500 victory. Mears would again be presented with the trophy after his record fourth Indianapolis 500 victory in 1991.
The BorgWarner Team Owner's Trophy was unveiled in 1998 to celebrate the 70th anniversary of BorgWarner, a product leader in highly engineered components and systems for vehicle powertrain applications. The Team Owner's Trophy is similar to the Championship Driver's Trophy, but it has a band of art-deco racecars accented in gold to symbolize the importance of teamwork in auto racing.
Had the award been in existence earlier, this would have been the 11th time Penske would have received the trophy. Team Penske has won the Indianapolis 500 a record-setting 11 times; the Team also won in 1972, 1979, 1981, 1984, 1985, 1987, 1988, 1991, 1993 and 1994.
