INDIANAPOLIS, Monday, March 8, 2004 -- Super Aguri Fernandez Racing filed an entry for the 2004 Indianapolis 500-Mile Race on March 4, becoming the first team to officially enter the 88th running of the world's greatest auto race.
Indy Racing League(R) IndyCar(R) Series rookie Kosuke Matsuura was named as the driver on the entry.
The 88th Indianapolis 500 is scheduled for Sunday, May 30 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Entries must be postmarked by midnight March 31. Qualifications for the 33-car starting field begin on Pole Day, Saturday, May 15.
Matsuura, from Aichi, Japan, will drive the No. 55 Panasonic ARTA Panoz G Force/Honda/Firestone in the event after completing the Rookie Orientation Program. A backup car also has been entered.
Steve Ragan is the chief mechanic, with Tom Anderson the team manager. Open-wheel veteran Adrian Fernandez and former Formula One driver Aguri Suzuki own the team. Roger Yasukawa finished 10th last year in the team's inaugural Indianapolis 500 entry.
Matsuura finished 11th in the season-opening Toyota Indy 300 on Feb. 29 at Homestead-Miami Speedway. He was the top-finishing rookie in his series debut.
