St. James Takes Entrepreneurship to New Heights
INDIANAPOLIS, May 11 - Lyn St. James, one of the world's top role models, is actually the head of two for-profit businesses - Lyn St. James Racing LLC and Lyn St. James Enterprises - and one 501 (c) 3 non-profit educational organization, the Lyn St. James Foundation.
Women-owned businesses are the fastest-growing segment of the United States' small business community, according to the U.S. Small Business Administration. Eight million women-owned businesses employ one in every five workers, grow at a rate twice that of all businesses, and contribute $2.3 trillion in sales and revenues to the nation's economy.
But few of those women have calendars quite like St. James. In the second quarter alone she'll have flown with the Blue Angels; visited the White House to watch the signing of important legislation for all minorities, including women; spoken to 800 schoolchildren at the opening of a racing movie; been interviewed countless times for print, radio and television broadcasts; and driven her own car at the Indy 500.
This month's Indy 500 effort is the cornerstone of Lyn St. James Racing LLC at the moment, although the company participates in other series and events as the opportunities develop. It's actively searching for funding to compete in the entire Pep Boys Indy Racing League schedule, of which the Memorial Day Classic is a part.
Lyn St. James Racing LLC was established in 1996 to provide a positive and stimulating environment for talented non-traditional professionals - especially girls and women - to succeed in the motorsports industry and in racing. The team is headquartered on Gasoline Alley in Indianapolis, just a short drive from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. This month's race marks the team's first official entry in the Indianapolis 500.
Lyn St. James Enterprises is an automotive marketing and management firm currently based in Daytona Beach, Fla. and Indianapolis. It handles off-track personal contracts for Lyn St. James and other women automotive experts, which include but are not limited to commercial endorsements, broadcast contracts, publishing, personal appearances, speaking engagements and consulting.
One of the offshoots of Lyn St. James Enterprises is the Lyn St. James Automotive Team, which primarily conducts three types of instructional and entertaining automotive events: ride and drive clinics, car clinics and fantasy camps. Clients of the Lyn St. James Automotive Team have included the Ford Motor Co., Lincoln Mercury, Bagwell Entertainment, Whitlock Auto Supply, Piccolo & Piccolo, GTE and others.
The Lyn St. James Foundation, established in December 1993, is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit educational organization that focuses on worldwide activities and programs for automotive safety and driver development, especially for aspiring race car drivers who are female.
The mission statement of the Lyn St. James Foundation is to provide leadership, vision, resources and financial support in order to create an open environment for women's growth in automotive fields. The foundation envisions a future that includes equal opportunity and a genuine appreciation of women's accomplishments and contributions to society.
The Lyn St. James Foundation currently encompasses many different programs. One of the most popular is the Lyn St. James Driver Development program, a comprehensive educational and training program designed to make careers in professional auto racing more accessible to talented drivers (especially females) through training in all areas of motorsports. Established in 1994, it utilizes the expertise of many industry professionals and consists of two courses: a four-day training course which requires some previous competitive experience, and a two-day youth training course.
"Some notable graduates to keep your eye on include Sara Senske, Sarah McCune, Danica Patrick, Jason Jarrett and Steve Knapp," St. James said.
