SMITHSONIAN CELEBRATES 90TH INDIANAPOLIS 500 WITH EVENT MARCH 7

INDIANAPOLIS, Friday, Feb. 10, 2006 -- The celebration of the 90th running of one of America's most exciting and historic sporting events, the Indianapolis 500-Mile Race, will kick off with a special event Tuesday, March 7 with The Smithsonian Associates in Washington.

The event starts at 7 p.m. (EST) at the Lisner Auditorium. The public will have the opportunity to ask questions of some of the Indianapolis 500's most famous current and former drivers.

An all-star driver lineup includes: Dan Wheldon, defending champion of the Indianapolis 500 and 2005 IRL IndyCar® Series champion; three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Johnny Rutherford; two-time winner Helio Castroneves; Janet Guthrie, the first woman to compete in the Indianapolis 500; and the father-and-son racing duo of Michael and Marco Andretti.

Michael Andretti is coming out of retirement for the 2006 Indy 500 to drive alongside his 18-year-old son at the 90th edition of "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing."

Fans also will enjoy many historical Indianapolis 500 film highlights, and Wheldon will be presented with his Indianapolis 500 Champion of Champions Ring from IMS President and Chief Operating Officer Joie Chitwood.

"We're very excited about this event in Washington," Chitwood said. "Just as the Smithsonian is known worldwide as the premier institution that connects people to the American identity and its history, the Indianapolis 500 is also known worldwide for being part of American history. This event with the Smithsonian is an ideal way to kick off our celebration of the 90th Running of the 500-Mile Race."

The Lisner Auditorium is located at the intersection of 21st and H Streets, on the campus of George Washington University. The address is 730 21st Street NW, Washington, DC 20052.

General admission tickets for the event are $30 for the general public, $20 for Smithsonian resident members, $18 for Smithsonian senior members and $15 for students with valid college identification.

Tickets are available in advance or at the door. To order advance tickets, call (202) 357-3030 or log on to www.smithsonianassociates.org.

The Indianapolis 500 is one of America's premier sporting events, and since its inaugural race in 1911 has grown to become one of the nation's cultural icons. Opening Day for practice for the 90th Indianapolis 500 is Sunday, May 7, and the 2006 edition of the "500" will get the green flag at 1 p.m. (EDT) Sunday, May 28.

The Smithsonian Associates provide educational and cultural programs that highlight and complement the work of the Smithsonian Institution through a wide variety of formats, including lectures, performances, courses and special events on the National Mall and across the country.
