FORT WORTH-DALLAS (May 25, 2001) -- Sometimes things just get better with age. Savoring the moment has its rewards, but frequently the true satisfaction and impact of an accomplishment are best appreciated in retrospect. So it is with Scott Sharp, who has had a year to reflect on winning the Casino Magic 500 at Texas Motor Speedway. Sharp put the #8 Delphi car in victory lane for Kelley Racing last June, and readily admits it was the highlight of the 2000 season for the team, and a victory that still drives him and his teammates.
"It was a fantastic race to be a part of," Sharp says. "Almost all of the drivers in the race felt they had never been part of such an event as that. There was such intensity in that race with cars running just inches apart for long periods of time. And, with such a big group of cars in the lead pack, you knew that if one car bobbled, it would affect all the cars in the pack. It was just an exciting race, and to come out on top, made it all the better."
Sharp has had a tremendous month of May this year, qualifying for the pole at the Indy 500, winning the Indy Pit Stop competition, and turning in the fastest practice time on Carb Day (Thursday) at 223.678 mph.
"We look back on the Casino Magic 500 as a real high point for the team last year," Sharp says. "And, no matter what the results were of the other races, to nail down a win of that caliber kept everybody's spirits high throughout the year. Texas Motor Speedway is so conducive to the Indy Racing Northern Light Series cars. We usually run two and three cars wide all the way around the track."
Sharp is hoping for more of that in this year's Casino Magic 500 on Saturday night, June 9.
