Late Fuel Stop Relegates Kanaan to 11th Place Finish at Infineon Raceway
SONOMA, Calif. (Aug. 27, 2006) -Tony Kanaan and Team 7-Eleven gambled that fuel strategy would spell another victory at Infineon Raceway. Unfortunately, the strategy didn't pay off and a pit stop on lap 79 of the 80-lap event dropped the #11 Team 7-Eleven car to an 11th place finish Sunday afternoon at the Indy Grand Prix of Sonoma.
Starting from fourth place on the starting grid, Kanaan dogged leader Scott Dixon and eventual winner Marco Andretti over the first 49 laps of the event. With Dixon experiencing a lengthy pit stop on lap 50, Kanaan found himself trailing only Andretti. But both Andretti Green Racing drivers would have to make their 30 gallons of methanol last the final 30 laps. Unfortunately, the Team 7-Eleven car had to make a short fuel-only stop in the waning moments, dropping the 2004 IndyCar Series champion to 11th place.
Teammate Dario Franchitti finished second, Vitor Meira third, Dixon fourth and Helio Castroneves fifth.
Through 13 events this season, Kanaan stands sixth in the driver point standings with 358 points.
Kanaan and the entire IndyCar Series bring the curtain down on the 2006 schedule on Sept. 10 with the Peak Antifreeze Indy 300 at Chicagoland Speedway. The event will be televised live by ABC Sports beginning at 12:30 p.m. (EDT). It can also be heard live by XM Satellite Radio subscribers by tuning into XM channel 145.
Tony Kanaan, #11 Team 7-Eleven Dallara/Honda/Firestone:
"First of all, I'm happy for Marco. It's great to see him get his first win. Our goal was to get a win for AGR this weekend and we did that. For us, I'm obviously disappointed. To come up short (on fuel) at the end is very frustrating."
Eric Cowdin, Race Engineer, #11 Team 7-Eleven Dallara/Honda/Firestone:
"Today was a great effort and that is what Team 7-Eleven is all about. You cannot have results like we had today without the work that started two weeks ago. Some days you're not going to benefit from that as much as you'd like. The Team 7-Eleven car was great but it was a disappointing day for us. We ran our race as best as we could and just came up short on our fuel mileage. I'm not real sure what gas prices are in California. I know they're pretty high but I would have paid a lot for a gallon of ethanol today."
