Meira Will Start Eighth Tomorrow at Infineon Raceway
Brazilian Grabs Eleventh Top Ten Start of Season
SONOMA, Calif. (Aug. 26, 2006) -- With an eighth place qualification Saturday at Infineon Raceway, Lincoln Tech driver Vitor Meira equaled his best start on a non-oval track this season. The 29-year-old Brazilian matched his starting effort at Watkins Glen, a track where he finished second back in June.
Vitor's quick lap was 105.746 mph, 1:18.3012 seconds. He will start on the outside of the fourth row next to former Formula One test driver Ryan Briscoe. This will be Meira's ninth start inside the Top Ten. Panther's driver also has 10 Top Ten finishes this year, which is tied for the most by any driver this season.
Meira has finished inside the Top Five at both road course events this year, helping vault his team into the fifth position in the championship standings, where they have been most of the season. Vitor is one of just six drivers eligible for the 2006 title, joining two former Panther drivers (Sam Hornish Jr. and Dan Wheldon).
Panther recorded a Top Five finish last season here with Tomas Enge, his best career result. Meira started 11th and finished ninth here last season with Rahal Letterman Racing.
Vitor Meira Quote:
"Our qualification run was good. I think we still need to step it up a little as far as qualifications go, but we are still happy. We wanted to make the Firestone Fast Six, but the key thing is how our racecar performs tomorrow. I know that the car will be good like it has been in practice, and (Race Engineer) Bill Pappas and (Team Owner) John Barnes always make great improvements to the Lincoln Tech Honda. We're excited to get back out there for the race."
