Matsuura Ends the Day 13th in the Infineon Indy Grand Prix
Race strategy did not have a chance to pay off today at the Infineon Indy Grand Prix for Kosuke Matsuura and the Super Aguri Fernandez Racing team. Matsuura, who started 13th , ran as high as sixth prior to his first pit stop on Lap 27. Unfortunately, contact between Matsuura and Buddy Rice on Lap 43 took Matsuura off the lead lap. He persevered to finish 13th .
Matsuura and the Super Aguri Fernandez Racing team will head to Chicagoland Speedway in two weeks for the IndyCar Series season finale on September 10.
Kosuke Matsuura, #55 Panasonic ARTA Dallara/Honda/Firestone:
"It was a tough race because my car handling wasn't as good as some of the other guys and I was quite a bit slower than the quickest cars. But Chris [Finch, race engineer] gave us a good strategy and put me in a good position early in the race and I was running quite strong. After our first pit stop, Buddy [Rice] came behind me and he tried to overtake me in the last corner. The lap before, he came inside and I was watching my mirrors and gave him the inside line and we didn't touch. This time he came inside and couldn't stop and hit me in my rear tire. Everything for our race went with that contact because I fell a lap behind. Overall, I think the team did a great job. We have one more race left in Chicago and that track is a good track for us. I'm looking forward to the race."
Chris Finch, Race Engineer:
"It was a pretty tough day for the #55 Panasonic guys. Buddy [Rice] and Kosuke got together. I think Buddy made a bad decision on that. He was pressing a little too hard and spun us and we stalled the engine. That put us a lap down and on a road circuit that pretty much is your race right there. We kept pushing the best we could do to finish 13th . The car was okay overall, but probably about half-a-second slow so I don't think we could have fought for a win but we probably could have fought a little deeper in the pack than what we showed. The guys did a great job, and Kosuke did a good job just driving and hanging on and pushing the best he could. We'll just put it in Speedway trim and go to Chicago."
