Castroneves Quickest Friday in California
Although they traded fastest lap several times, Team Penske's Helio Castroneves ended up at the top of the speed charts Friday at Infineon Raceway in northern California, edging IndyCar Series championship leader Dario Frachitti in each of the two practice sessions at the challenging, 2.26-mile road course just north of San Francisco.
Two of Franchitti's Andretti Green Racing teammates -- Tony Kanaan, who won here in 2005, and 2006 race winner Marco Andretti -- were third and fourth-quickest on the day. Scott Dixon, second in the tight championship fight and only eight points behind Franchitti, posted the third-fastest time in the morning practice and ended the day in fifth, with Team Penske's Sam Hornish Jr. rounding out the top six.
Dan Wheldon was seventh-quickest on the day, followed by Danica Patrick. Buddy Rice impressed once again with Dreyer & Reinbold Racing to run ninth, with IndyCar rookie Ryan Hunter-Reay continuing his series of strong performances to round out the top 10.
Helio Castroneves (#3 Team Penske Honda) quickest in practice: "This place is very challenging, but it's great to be back here. Up, down, left, right, all the time -- I tell you, it's a roller coaster! But the times are already faster than last year, in just our first day here. I think Honda's improved the engine, we have more torque off the corners for sure. We did a good job today, the entire team, but I know that both Dario [Franchitti] and Tony [Kanaan] will be right there again tomorrow, too. And you can't count out the others, like Scott [Dixon] and Marco [Andretti], either. It's going to be a tough weekend and whoever wins here on Sunday will have earned it."
