Fountain, Colo. (August 27, 1999) - Scott Harrington set the fastest lap of the day, topping the speed charts in both the morning and afternoon sessions at Pikes Peak International Raceway. "The CertainTeed car and the CertainTeed crew were awesome today," said Harrington.
Harrington's fastest lap of the day, at 175.234 mph/20.544 seconds, was set in this morning's session. "The conditions were a little worse this afternoon than they were this morning because the wind picked up some and the track was a little greasy."
In the afternoon, after running one-tenth of a second slower than he did in the morning session, Harrington decided to park the CertainTeed car before the end of the session. "We made a few changes, and we may have been able to pick up another tenth or two, but there was no reason to, really. We are in good shape now, and we want to stay in good shape for qualifying tomorrow."
Sam Schmidt, driver of the Sprint PCS Treadway Racing entry, set the second fastest lap of the day. Schmidt also set his fast lap in the morning session. "We're trying to get it where I can do it flat out, and we're not there yet. I don't know as a driver if you're ever satisfied unless you're doing the thing flat out," said Schmidt.
In the afternoon session, Schmidt's time dropped a half-second from his morning time. "I don't know how much this afternoon is going to play in our setup for tomorrow. We kind of worked on the balance. We'll use that tomorrow, but not much."
Jeff Ward drove consistently all day, taking the third position in each practice session. Ward's lap at 173.871 mph and 20.875 seconds in the morning session was the third fastest of the day. "We're doing a lot better than we did when we were here last time," said Ward. "Testing really helped a lot. Goodyear has a good front tire for us and our motor is better, so I can't complain. We're a little bit slower than we were at the test but the track is different now. We have the balance real good for qualifying, we should be in the top three or four."
Scott Sharp and Buddy Lazier filled out the top-five today. Although Sharp is still searching for the right setup on the car, he found track conditions to be tricky too. "We're still trying to fine tune the car," said Sharp. "The track does not have much grip at this point. The car isn't exactly where we want it to be. We'll work on adjustments tonight, and I hope we'll pick up the speed we need. We know what we need to do."
