Treadway Racing and Sam Schmidt Fastest in Day One of Open Test

Indianapolis, January 8, 1999: As day one of the IRL open test at the Walt Disney World Speedway drew to a close yesterday afternoon, Sam Schmidt's name rose to the top of the speed chart with a posted time of 21.225 and an average speed of 169.611 mph.

This test was Schmidt's first with the '99 G-Force and it was apparent that as Treadway's newest addition, he has settled in quickly. The Treadway/Schmidt combination ran approximately 170 laps and was spent most of their time fitting him in the car. "My seat is still awkward and we are still working on my comfort level in the car," said Schmidt. "But we knew the speed would be there, it was just a question of how many laps before we were comfortable with it. Being on the top of the speed chart is a great feeling and I am really enjoying working with the Treadway crew. This is a great opportunity and all of elements-car, tires and power-are coming together nicely. Is it too early to start focusing on the Championship?"

Schmidt, who finished second at the 1998 season finale in Las Vegas is hoping to continue his front row trend as he pilots the #99 Sprint PCS/G-Force/Aurora/Firestone entry across the start/finish line at the Orlando oval.
