Sam Schmidt Home-And Settling In

Indianapolis, IN: After months of a strange environment, strenuous rehabilitation, physical adjustment and making new friends in a new city, Sam Schmidt returned home last Saturday, June 24, to Las Vegas with his family to begin a new life in familiar surroundings.

Released from months of innovative and very progressive rehabilitation at the Neurorehabilitative Unit at the Washington University School of Medicine and Barnes-Jewish Hospital for a spinal injury sustained during pre-season testing, Schmidt has a few adjustment trepidations, but is thrilled to be back home.

"I think everyone is a bit paranoid about my return home," stated Schmidt.

"The transition is a bit frightening, but we're getting everything figured out OK. Unfortunately, until all of the new systems are in place here, I really can't do much. '

'It is so great to be home. It's just nice to be back in Vegas with my family. I had a lot going on this week and I have a list going to smooth things out so that I can regain my independence. One thing is for sure, I am lucky to have so many people helping me out right now. I'm fortunate to have my immediate family, extended family and many friends to help me with this transition so that it isn't a burden on my wife Shiela and the kids."

A busy week, the Schmidt household has made a few new changes to accommodate his return, including new ceramic flooring for ease of motion and space reorganization to make room for rehabilitative equipment. "I actually have all of the stuff I had in St. Louis," Schmidt said. "I ordered a Spinmaster exercise bicycle and the Light Gate Walking Machine, which is the same treadmill I had in the hospital."

In addition Schmidt is also working with family members to install voice activated computer software which will make everyday life easier and more productive.
