Sam Hornish Jr. has clinched the Indy Racing Northern Lights Championship at Chicagoland in Joliet, Illinois.

Buddy Lazier gave it everything he could to stay in the points chase with Hornish Jr, but finished 2 laps down.

Hornish Jr. set the pace for the season this year by winning the first two races and continued to either win or finish in the top ten during the season, with the exception of the Indianapolis 500 where he finished 14th.

Hornish Jr. is the youngest champion in IRL history.

Motorsport.com wishes to congratulate Hornish Jr., the Panther Team and Oldsmobile on winning the 2001 drivers' championship.
