FORT WORTH-DALLAS (May 11, 2004) - The Indy Racing League IndyCar Series features a trio of rookies who are eager to compete in the Bombardier 500k at Texas Motor Speedway on June 12. The three drivers are a testament to the talent being developed by the IRL.
"The rookie points chase is one of the top goals I've set for myself this year," said Red Bull Cheever Racing's Ed Carpenter, who finished third in the Menards Infiniti Pro Series point standings a year ago. "Another goal I've set for this year is to win my first IRL race. I have two opportunities at Texas to do that this year and would love to win my first race there. Texas is a really exciting track. It's a good race for fans because of the excitement and hype that surrounds the whole weekend."
Mark Taylor is in the driver's seat for the #2 Menards/Johns Manville car for Panther Racing this year. A year ago he dominated the Menards Infiniti Pro Series winning the championship with his record seven race victories.
"I thoroughly enjoyed the Pro Series race in Texas last year, and I was also able to get my first test in an IndyCar down there," Taylor said. "I'm very confident in my team and in myself, and we're expecting a couple of good finishes at Texas Motor Speedway this season."
Everything is new this year for Kosuke Matsuura, driver for Super Aguri Fernandez Racing. But he seems to be adjusting well. He had the sixth fastest time (219.034 mph) on Monday in practice for the Indianapolis 500 and currently leads the Bombardier Rookie of the Year standings and is 10th in championship points.
"This is my first year in the IRL IndyCar Series and also my first year of racing in the United States," Matsuura said. "It will also be my first visit to Texas and my first night race, so there will be a lot to learn. I know the races there are always exciting, and there are a lot of fans that come to see us race."
Carpenter, Taylor, and Matsuura battle the veterans in The Original Nighttime IndyCar race, the Bombardier 500k at Texas Motor Speedway on Saturday, June. 12.
