WOW! My second Indy car race and I went three wide, twice, and over 218+mph! ! The whole weekend was just unbelievable. I experienced so many incredible moments, I'm not quite sure where to begin. I know I feel like the luckiest person alive to be given the chance to drive the Meijer/Coke-Cola/Firestone car for Treadway Hubbard Racing.
The car felt great from the beginning of the first practice session Friday. We were consistent with 216-217mph.The engineers used data from my practice at this track a few weeks ago for the setup on both cars. We were able to collect such good information, we hardly had to change a thing. I felt good knowing I contributed to the team and provided excellent feedback.
The car handled so well, we actually got to pass some cars on the outside. If that wasn't enough, I found myself going three wide two different times, into turn one with the race leaders, Jacque Lazier and my teammate, Felipe Giaffone. My great coach, Arie Luyendyk, told me that if any one was going to pass me, not to lift, but to make them work for it on the outside. That's exactly what I did! How incredible is it to work with Arie and this crew??
There are a couple of other things that stick out in my mind. I am still amazed at the amount of g-force your body sustains during the race. It is so important to be in great physical condition. Even so, your neck really takes a beating. My foot was getting a little stiff too. You didn't lift at this track!
What a feeling to drive in front of 80,000 people. After the race, I stayed in my driver's suit another 2 hours and signed autographs for fans in the garage area. It is so neat to share the excitement with people one on one. I want them to leave with a good feeling about the team and the league.
My thanks goes out to all of you who watched us race, for your support and good luck wishes. I will be driving in the final IRL race of the season, Dallas, Texas September 16th. ESPN 4:30pm EDT 3:30 Indiana time. Friday Sept 14th will be qualifying at 4:45pm.
Unfortunately, we do not have any sponsors for this race or next season.
