VISION RACING SECURES SPOT IN TOP-10 IN TEST AT RICHMOND
RICHMOND, Virginia -- It's another hot weekend for the IndyCar Series as they travel to Richmond International Raceway for the SunTrust Indy Challenge presented by XM Satellite Radio and Vision Racing battled the heat well; recording the ninth and 12th quickest speeds.
Temperatures broke into the upper 90s at the track today, but the heat was no match for Vision Racing. The team took advantage of a four-hour open test session to complete a total of 223 laps on the day.
Carpenter led the way for the team with the ninth quickest speed of the day at 167.627 mph in the #20 Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone. Carpenter completed a total of 102 laps in preparation for the 250-lap event to occur on Saturday evening.
It's no surprise that Carpenter faired well today as the bullring-style, 0.75-mile oval matches Carpenter's technique well. Growing up on America's short tracks, racing midgets, sprint cars and Silver Crown cars as a part of the United States Auto Club (USAC), Carpenter thrives on the style of racing that short tracks produce.
While Carpenter only has two IndyCar Series starts at Richmond, both of which he finished in the 16th spot, this will not be just the third time he's piloted a car there. In 2002 and 2003, Carpenter drove a Silver Crown car at Richmond, with impressive second and third place finishes. In addition, in his first start in an IndyCar at Richmond, he ran as high as fifth before being taken out late in the race.
Recording the 12th quickest time, Scheckter got the #2 Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone up to a top speed of 165.833 mph and completed a total of 121 laps. Scheckter knows what it takes to run up-front at Richmond. In his four starts at the track, Scheckter has finished fourth two different times; the first time occurring in his first attempt at the track in 2002 with Cheever Racing and most recently just this past season with Panther Racing. His best start is fifth in 2004, also with Panther Racing, and his average finish at the track is 10.8.
Open Test Results and Quotes: (June 22, 2006)
Ed Carpenter -- #20 Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone
"It's been a good test. We started out and I wasn't exactly happy with the car. It (the car) was doing a couple of things that were funny, but we stayed out there and tuned on it a bit and made a lot of progress. There at the end the car was really good and it felt really consistent as far as a racecar is concerned. We worked through a lot of stuff. I'm sure that once we go back and look at the data, we'll come up with some more ideas as to how to improve the car. It was a pretty good test with it just being a half day, so I stayed out there and sweated it out in the car. I definitely found out a lot about the car and it feels a lot different than the car I had here last year. It feels like a good racecar so it should be good for Saturday night."
Tomas Scheckter -- #2 Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone
"It was okay, but we struggled a little today because we couldn't find the balance that we wanted. We first went out and things went pretty well, but we sort of lost the balance and ended up going back and forth. We'll have a look at it and see what we can do, but I think we'll be okay.
