Pennzoil Panther Racing driver Sam Hornish Jr. sizzled in the closing minute of tonight's SunTrust Indy Challenge, passing Team Penske driver Gil de Ferran to take his third Indy Racing League victory of 2002. The win was the sixth IRL victory Hornish has recorded on Firestone Firehawks.

Firestone Racing Project Supervisor Joe Barbieri: "I don't think there was a fan not standing during the last 10 laps of tonight's race, with no one sure who would cross the finish line first. That great racing action, especially the duel between de Ferran and Hornish, showcased the grip and durability of the Firehawks as drivers weaved and passed with amazing control. We're certainly proud to contribute to such great racing action. We also want to congratulate Sam and the Pennzoil Panther team for such a superb effort. Sometimes a team has it all together, and that was the case tonight for Sam and his crew."

Winner Sam Hornish, Jr., Pennzoil Panther (Dallara/Chevrolet/Firestone): "We had a really good set-up and a lot of grip from the Firestones. We were just super stuck to the track all night long. When we went back green at the end, I knew the car was fast and it was just a matter of getting the timing right - and the Firestones were perfect at the end."

Rich man at Richmond: Gil de Ferran is going to be cashing some checks from Firestone. In tonight's pre-race ceremonies, he picked up a $10,000 check for leading lap 63 at the Pikes Peak event. Tonight he earned another $10,000 check for leading at lap 64 in the SunTrust Indy Challenge, and the check will be presented next weekend at the Kansas City race. The Firestone Racing program is presenting a $10,000 check at every 2002 IRL event, celebrating Firehawks being used in every IRL competition since the series began racing in 1996. Tonight marked the 64th IRL race.
