WHELDON BATTLES TO FIFTH-PLACE FINISH AT RICHMOND
RICHMOND, Va. (June 25, 2005) - Klein Tools/Jim Beam driver Dan Wheldon ran a solid and consistent race, culminating in a fifth-place finish Saturday at the SunTrust Indy Challenge at Richmond International Raceway. By finishing in the top five, Wheldon increased his lead in the points championship chase to 83 over teammate Tony Kanaan.
Through the first half of the race, Wheldon stayed within reach of the top-five drivers. As the second half of the race progressed, Wheldon began to gain on the drivers in front of him and climbed to as high as fourth place with fifty laps to go. Wheldon continued to chase the top three until a late yellow came out on lap 241. The race concluded with a two-lap shootout where Wheldon ran into lapped traffic and was passed to finish in fifth.
Helio Castroneves won his first race of the year. He was followed across the line by Wheldon's AGR teammate, Dario Franchitti. Patrick Carpentier, Tomas Scheckter and Wheldon rounded out the top five.
The IndyCar Series resumes Sunday, July 3, with the Argent Mortgage Indy 300 from Kansas Speedway. ESPN will provide live coverage of the 200-lap event at 1:30 p.m. (EDT).
Dan Wheldon, #26 Klein Tools/Jim Beam Dallara/Honda/Firestone:
"I just tried to rack up the points tonight. When I saw Tony (Kanaan) and (Sam) Hornish go out it changed my approach a little bit. I had to be a bit cautious a couple of times at the end and it cost me a little bit. I think I could have come third, but I just needed to play a bit of a points game. It was pretty crazy out there at times. I just kind of did my own thing and tried to bring the Klein Tools/Jim Beam car home."
John Anderson, Team Manager, #26 Klein Tools/Jim Beam Dallara/Honda/Firestone:
"Unfortunately, after the last few stops, our tires were turning on the rim and that caused severe vibration in the car. Our restarts need some attention as well. Unfortunately on the last restart, Dan had to check up with some back markers, some lapped cars that wouldn't get out of the darn way. They should have gotten out of the way and let the guys run for the finish. He got checked up there and Scheckter got us. We're disappointed that we didn't get fourth, but we'll take the points and the fifth-place finish."
